SCIATICA
There are various nerves in our body which sometimes due to external pressure can cause numbness. Malfunctioning of nerves is a very serious problem as it can lead to reduced mobility or excruciating pain. The pain originating from the Sciatic nerve is termed as Sciatica. Sciatic pain can be mildly disturbing to burning, aching, deep & similar to sudden bolt of lightning. The pain travels from Buttocks, back of thigh, up to the leg. In some patients it gets reflected up to the foot. Along with pain, other symptoms such as tingling, burning, numbness may be felt in buttocks, thigh, behind the knee, calf, ankle & occasionally foot.
What is Sciatica according to Ayurveda?
Ayurveda has described Sciatica as Gridhrasi. Gridhra means Vulture, as the gait of the affected person resembles that of a vulture’s walk.
Sciatica has been categorized as one of the diseases caused by mainly vitiation of Vata dosha. Pain, tingling sensation and reduction in mobility at lower back, hip joint & knee joint are more pronounced in Vata dominated cases.
