PILES

Plies are known as Hemorrhoids in medical terminology. In this disease, veins of anal canal get swollen and result in bleeding along with stools. This inflammation can be internal or external. Generally Piles is associated with a long history of indigestion and constipation. This condition leads to hard stools which exert pressure on already engorged veins at the Anus. Hence in some cases piles may bleed or in some cases piles may be dry.

What are Piles according to Ayurved?

In Ayurved, Piles is termed as ‘Arsha’. According to their positions Piles are classified as External piles &internal piles. According to Symptoms they are classified as Dry & Bleeding. According to Ayurved, the main reason behind this disease is Weak digestion and vitiation of Vata dosha due to various reasons. This vitiated vata causes formation of Hemorrhoids at the anus. Along with Vata dosha, vitiation of Pitta/Kapha/Rakta can also take place.

What are the causes for Piles?

  1. Weak digestion
  2. Over eating or excessive fasting
  3. Suppressing natural body urges such as Defecation, Micturition, passing gas etc.
  4. Constipation
  5. Excessive sexual activity
  6. Injury to anus
  7. Sedentary lifestyle
  8. Obesity
  9. Excessive straining during evacuation of bowels
  10. Straining during child birth, repeated abortions
  11. Excessive intake of hot, dry, spicy, pungent foods, Alcohol etc.

Signs & Symptoms

  1. Constipation
  2. Pain & Bleeding may occur during defecation
  3. Bloating
  4. Abdominal pain, heaviness
  5. Irritation/Itching around Anus
  6. Swelling/Protrusions can be felt at the anus
  7. Lower back pain

Many Home remedies are useful for Piles such as intake of 10-12 soaked Black raisins everyday helps in evacuation of bowels.

Include vegetables such as Radish, carrots, Elephants foot in regular diet.

Include Buttermilk, rock salt etc. in diet

DO’S

  1. Intake of freshly prepared warm food
  2. Include Ghee [Purified butter] in regular meals
  3. Increase intake of whole grains, use whole wheat flour instead of refined flour, Pulses, green leafy vegetables etc. Foods which are rich in fibres.
  4. Fresh fruits such as Papaya, Mangoes, Berries, Pomegranates, Indian gooseberry etc.
  5. Regular exercises such as Walking, Yoga, Pranayam etc.

DON’T’S

  1. Processed foods, refined flour, packaged & canned foods
  2. Intake of heavy, dry, stale foods
  3. Tea, Coffee, Aerated drinks, Alcohol etc.
  4. Excessive fasting or Over eating or Eating before the earlier meal is digested
  5. Sleeping during Day time, Late night sittings
  6. Sedentary lifestyle, lack of Exercises
  7. Excessive sexual activity
  8. Excessive travelling, sitting on a hard surface for longer duration
