KIDNEY STONE

A kidney stone is a hard, crystalline, mineral material formed within the kidney or urinary tract. Kidney stones may be of pin head size up-to the size of grape fruit. It may get passed unnoticed through urine if its size is very small. But if the stones are of larger size they get obstructed in urinary tract leading to acute pain, bleeding through urine & obstruction of urine.

What are Kidney stones according to Ayurved?

In Ayurved Kidney stones are called as ‘Ashmari’. Improper diet along with sedentary lifestyle leads to aggravation of Dosha- Vata, Pitta &Kapha. This vitiation leads to impairment of digestion. Due the indigestion there is formation of Aam in the body. This Aam gets deposited in urinary tract leading to crystallization thus leading to formation of Kidney stones.

What are the causes of Kidney Stones?

  1. Improper diet such as oily, heavy to digest foods, too much intake of meats, fish, poultry, stale, fermented foods, processed foods etc.
  2. Excessive intake of alcoholic beverages, aerated drinks, tea, coffee etc.
  3. Indigestion
  4. Sedentary lifestyle
  5. Excessive physical work
  6. Less intake of water
  7. Working for longer periods in direct sunlight
  8. Suppressing natural urges especially defecation, micturition etc.

Signs & Symptoms

  1. Nausea
  2. Vomiting
  3. Acute radiating pain from flanks to urethra
  4. Frequency of urination
  5. Burning sensation during passing urine
  6. Bleeding through urine

Dietary & Lifestyle management

DO’S

  1. Minimum intake of 1-2 Litres of Water every day. Drink more if working outdoors, in hot water, in heavy perspiration condition etc.
  2. Eating fresh, organic vegetables, light on digestion foods
  3. Moderate intake of Ghee
  4. Moderate exercises
  5. Increase intake of liquid foods such as fresh juices, soups, lime water, barley etc.

DON’T’S

  1. Food items such as Meats, fish, Poultry, pickles, chocolates etc
  2. Sour, heavy, dry, stale foods
  3. Alcohol, tea, coffee
  4. Suppressing natural urges of the body such as passing urine, defecation etc.
