Hypertension is defined as having a blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm of Hg. What is Hypertension according to Ayurved?

The symptoms seen in this disease can be related with the symptoms seen as ‘Pittavruta vata’. Vitiation of Vata dosha along with Pitta dosha is the pathophysiology which results in raised blood pressure according to Ayurved.

Unhealthy diet & sedentary lifestyle are the main causes these days for Hypertension. Due to these causes impairment of Digestion takes place, this leads to formation of Aam. This Aam does not get evacuated from the body easily hence it causes vitiation of Vata & Pitta dosha leading to various symptoms seen in elevated blood pressure.

Line of treatment according to Ayurved

   DO’S

  2. Fruits & Vegetables having high fibre content such as bitter gourd, snake gourd, ash gourd, fruits such as Papaya, Pomegranate, Chikoo, Berries etc.
  3. Inclusion of food items such as Garlic, Onion, Drumsticks, Black raisins are some of the home remedies which are useful in reducing High Blood Pressure
  4. Intake of 1 Teaspoon of Ghee [Clarified Butter] every day.
  5. Regular physical activity such as brisk walking, Yoga, Pranayam, Surya Namaskar etc.
  6. Reduce mental stress as much as possible, Meditation is also helpful in reducing stress
  7. Minimum 7-8 hrs sleep at Night

DON’T’S

  1. Intake of high fat diet such as Meat, Poultry, Dairy products etc.
  2. Processed foods, refined flour, fermented, stale foods, oily & fried foods etc.
  3. Mental stress, anxiety, anger, grief etc.
  4. Suppressing natural urges such as passing gas, defecation etc.
  5. Physical inactivity
  6. Sleeping during day time
  7. Excessive Alcohol consumption, Cigarette smoking
  8. Excess intake of Tea, Coffee
