GALL STONES

The gallbladder is a small sac located on the right-hand side of the body, on the underside of the liver. Bile is a greenish-brown liquid which the liver produces. Bile is stored and concentrated in the gallbladder. Gall goes into the small intestine via the bile ducts to facilitate the digestion, mainly of fats. The chemicals in the gall bladder such as Calcium billirubinate, calcium carbonate, cholesterol solidify leading to formation of Gall stones.

There are 3 types of Gallstones – Cholesterol stones, Bile pigment stones, mixed stones.

What are Gallstones according to Ayurved?

Gallstones can be related with ‘Pittashmari’ according to Ayurved. According to Ayurved, vitiation of all 3 Doshas – Vata, Pitta & Kapha are responsible for formation of Gall stones. Due to various causes such as over intake of hot, spicy, pungent foods etc. vitiation of Pitta takes place. Similarly, heavy to digest foods such as Meats, Poultry, dairy products such as Yogurt, Cheese, etc leads to vitiation of Kapha. This vitiated dosha results in Indigestion. This indigested food is called as Aam which stays in the body for longer duration. It forms kind of slurry. This results in congestion & obstruction of flow of bile. This vitiation of Kapha& Pitta leads to vitiation of Vata dosha which in turn dries up the Aam resulting in formation of Gallstones.
