What is Fibromyalgia according to Ayurveda?

Fibromyalgia can be correlated with a subtype of disease known in Ayurveda as Vatavyadhi. Vatavyadhi includes diseases which are chronic & difficult to cure. They mainly involve musculoskeletal system & Nervous system.  These are the diseases caused primarily by vitiated Vatadosha. Origin of the pathogenesis is the Gastro-intestinal tract. Elevated Vatadosha from GIT branches out to various systems of the body especially musculoskeletal system.

What are the causes of Fibromyalgia?                                                  

Exact cause of Fibromyalgia is currently unknown. Some associated causes are

  1. Psychological distress
  2. Trauma
  3. Fasting
  4. Over exercising
  5. Suppressing natural urges such as Defecation, Passing gas, Micturition etc.

Signs& Symptoms

  1. Pain usually affecting Neck, Shoulders, Arms, Upper back, Chest, Buttocks.
  2. Tender points are the localised points which are tender to light touch such as elbows, Shoulders, Hips etc.
  3. Fatigue, Irritability, Insomnia
  4. Irritable Bowel Syndrome [IBS]
  5. Mental & Emotional disturbances
