COLITIS
Colitis is an inflammation of the Colon. It may be Acute and self -limiting or Chronic i.e. persistent. Acute Colitis is generally inflammation of lining of Colon due to Infection or Drug/Chemical/Irritant. It causes acute symptoms & usually heals completely.
Ulcerative Colitis is one of the type of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, it is a chronic type of Colitis where large intestine is involved, lining of the colon becomes inflamed & results in formation of Ulcers which produces Pus, mucus etc. This disease usually begins in rectal area but may involve entire large intestine. Symptoms also usually develop over the time than suddenly.
What is Colitis according to Ayurveda?
Acute & Chronic types of Colitis can be co-related with a disease called as Grahani. Especially Ulcerative Colitis can be considered as Pitta dominant Grahani.
According to Ayurveda; along with equilibrium of Vata, Pitta & Kapha Dosha, maintenance of Agni [Digestive power] is the most important aspect responsible for Health.
In normal state, Pitta Dosha along with Vata dosha is responsible for all the biochemical activities such as Bio-transformation, digestion, metabolism, assimilation etc.
In this disease due to poor digestion, vitiation of Pitta dosha, formation of Aam takes place. Over the time this Pitta dosha causes vitiation of intestinal lining resulting in various symptoms. Extreme vitiation of Pitta dosha results in severe inflammation, ulceration & rectal bleeding.
