BED WETTING
Bed-wetting in childhood is a mere laughing stock. But it needs to be understood that it is medical condition.
Bed wetting which is also called as Nocturnal enuresis. In this condition the child passes urine unknowingly during sleep at night. In Ayurved, it is called as Shayya-Mutrata.
The process of Micturition comes under normal function of Apana Vata [One of the type of Vatadosha]. Vitiation of this Vatadosha may lead to loss of control over Micturition.
Bed wetting is an embarrassing health complaint for the child. So, along with medicinal treatment, psychological guidance to the child & parents is necessary.
What are the causes for Bed wetting?
Child’s urinary bladder does not have enough strength to hold urine for the entire night. Naturally as the age progresses this complaint may subside.
- Excessive fluid intake during evening/night hours.
- Delayed bladder maturation
- Constipation, filled up rectum can put pressure on the bladder resulting in early emptying of it than normal
- Child not toiled trained
- Stress, anxiety, underlying fear; such emotional problems
- Urinary tract infection
- In rare cases, structural abnormalities
Line of treatment according to Ayurved
- Internal medication such as Amla [Indian gooseberry], Triphalachoorna, Chandraprabhavati, Kalyanakaghrita etc.
- De-worming treatment gives relief in many cases
- If emotional cause is found out, Counselling to both Child & Parents is very helpful. Children need to be assured that there is nothing shameful in it, most of the children do wet the bed. There is nothing bad about it. It’s just a temporary problem. It will go away with medicine.
Diet & Lifestyle management
DO’S
- Wake the kid up early in the morning. Allow him to visit bathroom and then to go to bed.
- Giving assurance to the child is the utmost important thing
- Reward the dry nights to boost confidence of the child
- Encourage the child to empty the bladder before going to bed
- In emotional causes, medicines improving mental strength such as Brahmi, Shankhapushpi etc are also helpful
DON’T’S
- Mental stress
- Excessive fluid intake at night hours
- Cold water, aerated drinks, Coconut water at night
